Historic Downtown St. Marys is the epitome of small town charm with family-owned shops, bed & breakfasts, and locally owned restaurants known for their fresh seafood (you can see the shrimp boats along the waterfront). Here are even more reasons why you’ll be charmed by St. Marys:
St. Marys is the Gateway to Cumberland Island, the largest and southernmost barrier island in Georgia, offering 18 miles of white-sand beaches perfect for beachcombing. Catch a glimpse of wild horses, dolphins, sea turtles, shore birds and much more. Ferry boats run daily from downtown St. Marys.
The Howard Gilman Memorial Park overlooks the St. Marys River. This beautiful community waterfront park features old fashioned wooden swings hung in rose-covered arbors. Watch the shrimp boats come in or witness a stunning sunset. Special events include the ongoing Starry Nights Series hosted by the City of St. Marys each summer. Just a short stroll from the main park is the Tilden Norris Marsh Walk, an authentic tidal marsh complete with fiddler crabs and snowy egrets. The playground has benches for the adults, swings for the kids and beautiful fountain for photos (and making wishes!)
The Crooked River State Park is just down the road from Winding River and offers a great place to camp, fish, hike or launch your boat.
The Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge and its abundant activities are great day trip. Enjoy air boat rides and getting up close and personal with the wildlife.
